No Special "diet" foods

I try to eat pretty much what my family is eating- that way, we are all making healthy choices the majority of the time. I don't have to prepare 2 meals and its something I can sustain over time. Its not realistic to me to eat "special" or "diet" foods over a lifetime. I just control the portion sizes!

Yogurt Pudding Treat

My newest treat is to blend 1 cup non fat yogurt into 1 dissolved (and chilled but not set) 4 cup package of light jello. I pour into 4 to go containers and chill to set overnight. I particularlly like orange and strawberry; reminds me of a creamsicle but so much healthier !

....and they're right! I have always had a hard time drinking water. It's so, I don't kno, BLAH! I spent the last ten years of my life living off coffee and soda. I've tried different things like Crystal Light and other flavor additives but it didn't work. I have recently decided to pack with my lunch for the day 4 16oz bottles of water and I force myself to drink them all before I leave work to go home. It's kind of a game! Plan Ahead

Prepping vegetables and precooking quinoa and yams for example, once a week allows me to choose wisely when it's mealtime. I have divided my fridge into healthy carbs on one side, and healthy lean protein on the other. Also, I keep a small food scale on the kitchen counter so I can always portion my food. Every morning I fill 2 water pitchers that I can drink throughout the day.

Have to do BREAKFAST

I can NOT stand to eat breakfast due to the habit of not doing so for so many years. However, I know it's good for you. I also am not a fan of oatmeal. So what's a girl to do. ~grin~ Well, combine Instant oatmeal variety packs by quaker to your morning cup of coffee. It's premeasured, it's already in the nutrition tracker and it takes less than 5 minutes to make! Also small enough serving a two year old could choke it down! LOL

Roll a stability ball to the middle of a gymnastics mat. Lie down with your back on the mat, and roll the ball under your lower legs. Both lower legs are parallel to the floor, knees and hips are bent approximately at 90 degrees.

Keep your arms are next to your body. Keep your abdominals engaged while you lift your right leg off the ball without changing the position of the spine. Press your left leg firmly into the ball, hold for seven to ten seconds.

Switch legs, now pressing the right leg into the ball. Return to start position. Start with 2 sets of eight to ten repetitions.

Recipe: Cheesy Manicotti

This recipe is great for cheese lovers. It has 3 different kinds of cheese and is still low in fat! This healthy dish makes for a great dinner meal for guests or your family

8 ounces tofu
2 egg whites
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup fat-free ricotta cheese
1 tablespoon parsley
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
8 manicotti shells
1 - 8 ounce can tomato sauce
1-16 oz. Can diced tomatoes
2 teaspoons basil
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Choose a favorite and say no to the rest

If you have a "trigger food" or binge item, one thing that helps me is to decide only to eat one type. I'll have a small serving of strawberry ice cream but say no to every other flavor or brand, just to keep from eating it except as a special "treat." Make a decision it is not worth it unless you have your choice - choose to say no otherwise.

Exercise: The "Pec Deck" with the Exercise Band

Sit upright on the ball with perfect posture. Have the exercise band around your back and under both armpits. Holding the band in each hand, keep your elbows both at 90 degrees.

Keeping your upper arms parallel with the floor, bring your elbow closer together, squeezing the chest muscles. Make sure that your shoulders do not lift up towards your ears.

Keep going until your elbow are touching, then open your arms wide, returning to the start position. Repeat each side 10 to 12 times, then rest. Repeat the entire exercise sequence once or twice.

Avoiding Temptation

The most dangerous time for me is in the evening. If you want to avoid eating mindlessly while watching TV, keep your hands busy with something else. For me that means knitting. I would never eat while knitting. You could try doing crossword puzzles, playing solitaire, needlework, reading, etc.

Scientists have discovered the first evidence linking brain function variations between the left and right sides of the brain to size at birth and the weight of the placenta.
