Portion Control snacking & Lunch ideas

One of my biggest problems before joining SparkPeople was eating before I went to bed. Uncontrolled portions of 'something..s.'
I have learned from tracking my eating habits just how much I was consuming. I had no idea! So to try to help myself, I am now making 'Portion-appropriate' choices and bagging them after I get home.
Examples: baggies of: mini-pretzels, baked chips, veggies, fruit, etc. Everyone in my family now knows that 1 baggie = 1 portion. We can grab & go!

Spicy food slows eating

Hot peppers raise your metabolism, but the real benefit of food with a little zing is that it slows your eating, says James Hill, PhD, past president of the American Society for Nutrition. 'Americans eat too fast,' he says. 'By the time your body signals that it's full, you've overeaten. Eating slower is a good weight-loss strategy, and making food spicier is an easy way to do it.'

Balance your food choices over time

Not every food has to be "perfect." When eating a food high in fat, salt or sugar, select other foods that are low in these ingredients. If you miss out on any food group one day, make up for it the next. Your food choices over several days should fit together into a healthy pattern.

Water

Fill a jug with lid 3/4 full of water (ie from milk, ice tea, water) and freeze...stash it in your cooler before grocery shopping....food will stay cooler and as the water melts you can refill everybody's cup or bottle. This works great at the beach too.

I even freeze a small water bottle whether I am home or running about...fun to have an ice cube in the bottle throughout the day. (a full bottle will over expand) 148

Berries, berries, berries!

Several times per week, I treat myself to whichever berries are on special at the store - I get them home, rinse, put a paper towel in a bowl, then pick them up one at a time to place in the bowl. I eat the very ripe ones as I go, and then leave the rest on the counter to snack on over the next day or two which seems to prevent snacking on unhealthy items.

Secondhand Gene Enables House Mice To Resist Poison

Since the 1950s, people have tried to limit the numbers of mice and rats using a poison known as warfarin. But, over the course of evolution, those pesky rodents have found a way to make a comeback, resisting that chemical via changes to a gene involved in vitamin K recycling and blood clotting. Now, researchers reporting online in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, show that European mice have in some cases acquired that resistance gene in a rather unorthodox way: they got it secondhand from an Algerian mouse...

Sugar is your enemy

After reading a new diet book which I find always motivates me, I took away a new goal. Watch out for those sugars. They are your enemy. And they are sneaky. They like to hide in familiar and unfamiliar places. You'll find them hiding in such things as ketchup and unsweetened cereal. Read labels and try for no more than 5g per serving. Good luck.

Getting A Grip On Grasping

Quickly grabbing a cup of coffee is an everyday action for most of us. For people with severe paralysis however, this task is unfeasible yet not "unthinkable". Because of this, interfaces between the brain and a computer can in principle detect these "thoughts" and transform them into steering commands. Scientists from Freiburg now have found a way to distinguish between different types of grasping on the basis of the accompanying brain activity...

I have found that if I track my food BEFORE I eat it, I'm more successful in staying within my ranges. This is for 2 reasons: first, I can see ahead of time if I'm eating too much, before it's too late to make changes. Second, it gives me the opportunity to see the impact of what I'm eating, and decide whether or not a particular food (like, say, ice cream!) is really worth the cost on that day.

want fries but need to be healthier?

chop potatoes into small cubes add a couple tbl of margarine and a packet of either Italian or Ranch dressing mix. make at 350 for 45 min (stir ocassionally) potatoes come out a nice golden brown, and are much healthier than french fries!

another good option is sweet potatoes with a couple tbl of margarine and a tbl of splenda brown sugar sprinkled over the top. bake the same amount of time, stir and enjoy!!

The Unfolding 'SAGA' Of Transcriptional Co-Activators

Successful gene expression requires the concerted action of a host of regulatory factors. Long overshadowed by bonafide transcription factors, coactivators - the hanger-ons that facilitate transcription by docking onto transcription factors or modifying chromatin - have recently come to the fore...

Fiber

Add fiber to your SP tracker. If you are not getting very much right now, add slowly and build up to at least 25 grams a day for most adults. Of course, check with your doctor first.

Do not try to meet your daily minimum using prepackaged foods with added fiber. They cause terrible gas and bloating!!

Peanut Butter "Ice Cream"

Hopefully I am not reposting this (my apologies if someone has already come up with this)
When I want ice cream, lately I take one TBSP of Peanut butter and 2 TBSP of Fat Free cool whip and mix it all up, put in the freezer for a bit and when it comes out it tastes pretty close to a PB shake!! But with way less guilt...it's a small amount rich enough to satisfy those cravings.

Un-tasty treat

My husband and daughter love ice cream. I make them buy mint-flavored ice cream (pretty much the only kind I won't eat). They're happy, and I'm not tempted.

Make It Your Own

My grandson told me I needed a garden and it should have carrots - that inspired me to really start a container garden. We have lettuce, tomatoes, radishes and of course carrots. They're doing great and we can't wait to try it out! 30

Don't Pass On H1N1 Fearing Guillain-Barre Researchers Ask Public

It has been a long debate in the United States as to whether or not vaccines used to battle the H1N1 outbreaks of recent lead to the development of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare disorder that causes the body's immune system to turn against itself, resulting in muscle weakness and even paralysis. A new study says no such chance. In 1976, a vaccine used during a U.S...

I need help remembering what I want to eat. So I plan my eating the night before. I track it then I print the "Full Day's Report". Then anything I need to make I can choose if I want to make it the night before or just have the stuff on hand. It makes life so much easier and my day is already one step ahead. 334

Discovery Of Atomic Structure For A Sodium Channel That Generates Electrical Signals In Living Cells Has Far Reaching Implications In Medicine

Scientists at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle have determined the atomic architecture of a sodium channel. The achievement opens new possibilities for molecular medicine researchers around the world in designing better drugs for pain, epilepsy, and heart rhythm disturbances. Sodium channels are pores in the membranes of excitable cells - such as brain nerve cells or beating heart cells - that emit electrical signals. Sodium channels selectively open and close to allow the passage of millions of tiny charged particles across the cell membrane...

Easy office lunches!

I keep a bag of frozen veggies (usually broccoli or green beans) in the freezer at work. For quick lunches, I grab a frozen entree of Ziti Marinara, Chicken Fettucini, Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes, etc. (I usually use Michelina's Lean brand). At lunch time, I microwave 1 cup of the frozen veggies in a bowl and then my frozen meal. When the meal is thoroughly heated ~ I spoon it over the veggies. This is a great way to "extend" those little 9 ounce meals and get in another serving of veggi...

25 Tesla, World-Record 'Split Magnet' Makes Its Debut

A custom-built, $2.5 million "split magnet" system with the potential to revolutionize scientific research in a variety of fields has made its debut at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory at Florida State University. The world-record magnet is operating at 25 tesla, easily besting the 17.5 tesla French record set in 1991 for this type of magnet. ("Tesla," named for early 20th-century inventor and engineer Nikola Tesla, is a measurement of the strength of a magnetic field...
